Hi, I’m Jen McLeish.
I am looking forward to getting to know you! Here is a little about me and my journey so far.
I originally studied Genetics (Bsc. Hons) at The University of Glasgow and started my career as a research technician at The University of Manchester conducting pioneering work in cell matrix and metastasis. Many years later I returned to Scotland to work as a research assistant at The University of Edinburgh and conducted new research in inflammatory respiratory and cardiovascular disease. I studied many different areas of research over the years I worked there including Nanoparticle Toxicology, Cancer research, inflammatory effects in COPD and Stem cell work.
After 12 years of working as a scientist I started a family and had to leave my career to focus on and advocate for my autistic and highly anxious daughter. For the following 5 years I volunteered locally in the communities I lived in as I could feel the need for connection to and for others in our distant and disjointed lives. I enjoyed providing music classes for babies, sensory play classes, breastfeeding support and running baby and toddler groups. In these spaces I provided support and connection for parents, grandparents, and carers.
After having my second child I continued learning about autism, as my youngest was diagnosed with PDA and the eating disorder ARFID. I studied a short course in the identification and management of ARFID at Winchester University and completed other courses in Sensory Processing Disorder. I also joined a parenting coaching course and worked for 2 years with families all over the world supporting them to see what was underlying challenging behaviours, how to use empathy, understanding and connection to empower their children and themselves.
My holistic journey started in 2019 as I started to become aware that I was starting to experience burnout. I was pushing myself to my limits, consumed by my whirling thoughts and patterns of shame that I started seeing effects to my physical health. I felt alone as I helped my children through autistic burnout and engaged in a great deal of school advocacy. The journey for my children was not easy and they both experienced school trauma. In addition any therapy that was offered seemed to increase their anxiety. From our experience we decided to remove our children from school and now live a fulfilling and happy life home educating. We established a family centred approach to everyday life and started holistic therapies such as EFL (Equine Facilitated Learning) and yoga.
Knowing that there had to be a better way of truly supporting them and others, I embarked on a healing and transformational journey studying to become a Trauma Informed Somatic Integrative Therapist at the International School of Holistic Healing (ISOHH) under the mentorship of Aimee Rai and accredited by the ACCPH.
